Getting back into watercolor

Painting Satsuma Mandarin

Watercolor painting of Satsuma Mandarins in my watercolor sketchbook using MeiLiang Watercolor Paint Set

I love collecting things and trying out art supplies. I thought I would be really into oil pastels, but before that happened, I managed to get myself to fall into the dark hole of watercolor.

For some background, like most kids, I tried watercolor when I was 11. I wasn't good at it, but I enjoyed that brief experimentation. Since then, I don't remember if I did any watercolor work at university.

I confess I didn't even like watercolor. I often create precise and concise artwork, and watercolor wasn't my style. Letting the water run simply isn't my motto.

It has been so long that I don't even remember when I last painted a watercolor. Now, I am obsessed. After watching online tutorials, I have been swatching different watercolor sets and practicing.

What caught me off guard was how expensive this watercolor hobby can be. Have you seen the watercolor paint by Daniel Smith? How about the 100% cotton watercolor paper by Arches? It is insane to feel okay using those pricey supplies when I knew I wasn't good at it.

I know people often say a good-quality watercolor supply does make a difference. I am slowly acquiring more, but now, I am taking my time and enjoying a little watercolor fun with my MeiLiang watercolor set.

I hadn't painted for ages, so this was my first watercolor painting: a couple of Satsuma Mandarins I love. The painting was certainly not perfect in any way, but I enjoyed taking breaks to try and learn.
